There are plenty of people out there struggling to lose weight. Most of these are hopping from diet plan to diet plan hoping to find the ‘next best thing’. However, maybe the ‘next best thing’ isn’t out there. Maybe you are struggling to lose weight not down to the amount of food you eat or exercise you do, but because of something else. Under-active thyroid gland
One of the top reasons as to why people struggle to lose weight is down to an under-active thyroid gland. This particular gland has control over the way in which your body uses energy. If it isn’t working properly then you will not be burning up as much energy throughout the day. Basically your metabolism would have slowed down. If you aren’t burning off energy fast then you won’t be losing weight, it really is as simple as that. People suffering from an under-active thyroid have many symptoms, although the most prevalent is related to losing weight, or even gaining weight, dry skin and hair loss. A slow metabolism can also be related to not being able to lose weight. There are plenty of reasons as to why this could happen, so if you feel you aren’t losing weight ‘quickly enough’ then you will need to go to a doctor who should be able to carry out tests on you to see what the problem is.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Around 10% of women suffer from a condition known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS for short. This is when male hormones get produced by the ovaries in excess. This causes a number of problems with regards to ovulation, however, it may end up causing excess weight gain due to it causing a resistance to insulin. If this condition is left untreated then you could end up with diabetes. Intolerance to certain types of food
One of the bigger causes of not being able to lose weight is intolerance to certain types of food. Most of the time it is down to the fact that your body lacks the ability to digest it as an enzyme is missing. Having a food intolerance can lead to bloating, as well as other symptoms. Some of the most common foods which people are intolerant to are dairy, soy, gluten, eggs, corn and nuts. Going to a doctor should be able to help you with this. They will ask you to cut out certain food groups until the problem is sorted out.
Side effects of medication
Finally, if you are taking any drugs then the inability to lose weight or putting on excess weight can be a side effect of these drugs. Antidepressants and steroids are the biggest culprit of this, and you should talk to your doctor should you be suffering from any of the side effects, they may have an alternative that they can prescribe you.
This is just a small smattering of reasons as to why you can’t lose weight. Thankfully, many of them are treatable if you go to a doctor. There is also on-going research that indicates what you ate at as a toddler, or even what your mother ate whilst she was pregnant with you, although this research is still preliminary.
